Kitchen design trends shift toward functionality and matte finishes

Modern kitchen design is shifting toward functionality, practicality, and cozy aesthetics. According to Houzz’s 2026 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, homeowners are prioritizing storage and long-term livability over purely clinical looks. Key trends include a return to natural wood cabinetry, the rise of specialty built-in features like walk-in pantries and beverage stations, and the integration of appliances into cabinetry for a streamlined appearance.

Designers are also emphasizing efficient layouts. Rather than oversized kitchen islands that can hinder movement, experts suggest sizing islands to improve circulation and storage. For waste management, interior designer Ángeles Martínez recommends placing trash bins near food preparation areas—such as in pull-out drawers or integrated countertop openings—rather than strictly under the sink.

In terms of materials, there is a growing preference for matte surfaces over glossy finishes. Matte materials, including matte glass on cooktops, are becoming popular because they are more resistant to fingerprints, smudges, and visible scratches, making them easier to maintain in high-use environments.
