Kitchen design trends for 2026 favor natural wood and warmth

Interior design trends for 2026 are shifting toward warmth and natural materials, marking a return to aesthetic elements popular in the 1980s. Designers note a growing demand for kitchens that feel more inviting and personal rather than purely functional.

A primary trend is the resurgence of brown kitchens and natural wood. Interior designer Grey Joyner reports that clients are increasingly seeking ‘warmer’ spaces, specifically requesting cabinets made of natural, stained wood rather than painted surfaces. This style mirrors the brown kitchens common in homes across the former Yugoslavia during the 1980s, which many had previously replaced with modern white or grey alternatives.

While the aesthetic draws inspiration from the past, modern versions will not be exact replicas. Designer Loren Lerner explains that contemporary cabinetry is moving toward cleaner lines and furniture-inspired profiles with minimal detailing, blending nostalgic warmth with modern minimalism.
