Kitchen hygiene experts recommend moving trash cans away from sinks

Interior design experts are advising against the common practice of storing kitchen trash cans under the sink. While this placement is often chosen for its discretion and proximity to water, it can create a hygienic issue.

Storing waste near the sink concentrates moisture, food residues, and plumbing leaks, creating an ideal environment for bacteria and fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) to thrive. These insects can rapidly reproduce and transport bacteria toward food preparation surfaces.

Ángeles Martínez of Beta Interiorismo recommends relocating the trash bin to the primary food preparation area, such as under the main countertop where peeling and cutting occur. This change aims to improve kitchen hygiene and streamline the disposal of organic waste during meal preparation.
