Kitchen knife maintenance and sharpening tips
Maintaining kitchen knife sharpness involves specific preparation and care routines to prevent premature dulling and corrosion. One method to facilitate sharpening is soaking the blade in a saline solution consisting of 60 grams of salt per 1 liter of water for approximately 90 minutes. This step is intended to assist the sharpening process and help the blade retain its edge longer, though it is not a replacement for actual sharpening. It is critical to dry the knife thoroughly immediately after soaking to prevent corrosion.
To extend the lifespan of knives, several maintenance habits are recommended. Hand washing with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft sponge is preferred over using a dishwasher, as high temperatures and harsh detergents can damage the blade, handle, or protective coatings. Knives should be dried immediately after washing to remove moisture. Additionally, proper storage is essential; instead of placing knives in a drawer with other utensils where they may collide and chip, they should be kept in a knife block, on a magnetic strip, or in protective sheaths.
