Kitchen odor management and range hood maintenance
Managing cooking odors in the home involves both preventative measures during cooking and proper maintenance of kitchen ventilation systems. To minimize smells during frying, it is recommended to create a cross-breeze by opening windows and closing bedroom doors to prevent vapors from settling in textiles. Using a range hood before and after cooking is also essential, as is adding fresh parsley or coriander seeds to hot oil to help mask unpleasant scents.
A common mistake in odor management is the improper cleaning of range hood filters. Most hoods utilize two distinct types of filters: metal grease filters and charcoal odor filters. While metal filters are designed to be washed to prevent grease buildup and fire risks, charcoal filters act as sponges for odor molecules. Attempting to wash a charcoal filter with water destroys its microscopic pores and its ability to absorb smells, rendering it ineffective and causing cooking odors to return quickly.
