Domestic management impacts mental health and relationships

Various studies and expert advice highlight the psychological and practical dimensions of domestic management. Research published in Scientific Reports by the University of Queensland examines the ‘tri-load’ of household work, which includes physical labor, cognitive load (planning and organizing), and emotional load (anticipating needs). This study suggests that how these responsibilities are perceived can significantly impact relationship quality.

Psychological perspectives also explore how cleaning habits, such as washing dishes while cooking, serve as strategies to reduce cognitive load and manage stress. While organization can regulate daily discomfort and lower cortisol levels, experts warn that rigid cleaning impulses can become dysfunctional if they cause anxiety.

Practical household maintenance is also emphasized for health and preservation. Experts suggest avoiding storing medications, perfumes, makeup, and jewelry in humid bathrooms to prevent deterioration. For respiratory health, reducing allergens like dust and mites through regular cleaning of bedding and ventilation is recommended. Additionally, using sodium bicarbonate in closets is noted as an effective, non-toxic method to neutralize odors and moisture.
