Kitchen sponge hygiene and bacterial contamination risks
Kitchen sponges are significant sources of bacterial contamination due to their porous structure, which retains moisture and organic food particles. This environment facilitates the growth of pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, and Listeria.
Experts note that bacteria can form a protective matrix known as a biofilm within the sponge fibers, shielding them from standard detergents. Biomedical expert Roberto Martins Figueiredo indicates that synthetic polyurethane sponges can accumulate resistant bacterial colonies after only seven days of use, suggesting weekly replacement is necessary for sanitary safety.
To effectively combat these microorganisms, food safety experts recommend disinfection using high temperatures. Methods such as microwave sterilization are cited as highly effective, as simple rinsing is insufficient to eliminate the bacteria once they have established themselves in the sponge.
