Kitchen tips for boiling eggs and preventing water overflow
Common kitchen techniques can improve cooking efficiency and prevent messes. Adding a small amount of vinegar to water when boiling eggs can help contain the contents if a shell cracks. The acetic acid in vinegar aids the coagulation of egg white proteins, causing them to solidify more quickly at the site of a crack rather than leaking into the pot. However, vinegar does not prevent shells from cracking, which is often caused by temperature changes or physical impact.
To prevent boiling water or starchy foods like pasta from overflowing, placing a wooden chopstick across the top of the pot can serve as a barrier. The wooden surface helps break up rising bubbles, and because wood is a poor conductor of heat, it remains safe to handle. While effective at delaying overflows, this method's success depends on the heat level and the amount of food being cooked.
