Kitimat council approves reworked downtown concept plan

The Kitimat council has unanimously approved a restructured Downtown Concept Plan designed to guide future improvements while maintaining the area’s existing layout. This new framework replaces a previous, more prescriptive master plan that had suggested reshaping the downtown area around a new road and a grid of smaller development sites.

The approved plan focuses on upgrading current streets, infrastructure, walkways, parks, and plazas, as well as promoting development on vacant sites. It aims to create a more compact, connected, and people-oriented downtown by prioritizing infill development and higher-quality pedestrian spaces.

Key principles of the plan include encouraging a diverse mix of residential, commercial, and retail uses and establishing activity hubs to strengthen the downtown identity. New developments are expected to respect the mid-century modern character of Kitimat while allowing for contemporary design. The plan also emphasizes the involvement of community stakeholders and local First Nations in the planning and development process.
