Kitimat elects Gus as its first Dog Mayor
The district of Kitimat has elected its first Dog Mayor, with a canine named Gus winning the contest. Gus secured 569 votes, defeating rival Koko, who received 435 votes.
While the office holds little executive authority, the lighthearted campaign was designed by municipal officials to increase civic engagement. The initiative aimed to encourage children to take an interest in voting, potentially prompting their parents to participate in municipal elections. Following three consecutive declines in voter turnout, participation in the October 17 election rose to 32 per cent, up from 22 per cent in 2022.
District business and communications manager Cameron Orr noted that the candidates were selected through word of mouth to ensure they were large, child-friendly dogs suitable for public appearances. Gus is expected to serve as a community ambassador and participate in various local initiatives over the coming year.
