KiwiRail launches
KiwiRail and TrackSAFE NZ have launched a new rail safety campaign for Rail Safety Week, encouraging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to "be a trainspotter when you cross." The campaign aims to promote positive behaviors—such as waiting, watching, and anticipating approaching trains—rather than relying solely on warnings about consequences.
Data shows 11 collisions between trains and vehicles or pedestrians occurred at level crossings in the year ending June 30, a decrease from 18 the previous year. However, officials noted that nine of these accidents occurred at crossings equipped with safety features like flashing lights, bells, or barrier arms. The campaign follows a July incident where three separate collisions occurred at level crossings in the Bay of Plenty and Wairarapa on the same day.
With Auckland’s City Rail Link set to increase train frequency, officials are urging the public to stop, look, and listen, wait for warning signals to cease, and ensure they have enough room to clear tracks before proceeding.
