KKE criticizes Greek government over school year shortages

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has issued a sharp critique of the government's educational policies regarding the start of the new school year. The party claims that official government assurances fail to address severe shortages and systemic issues within the Greek education system.

A primary concern cited is the staffing gap; while there are an estimated 45,000 vacancies, only 30,000 hires were made in the first phase, leaving at least 15,000 positions unfilled. This shortage impacts all-day school programs, parallel support services, and the availability of core subjects. Additionally, the KKE noted that the 5,000 permanent appointments represent a 50% reduction from initial commitments and only marginally cover retirements, leaving substitute teachers in a state of job insecurity.

The party also highlighted issues with school infrastructure and overcrowding, alleging that class sizes are being increased to 25 or 27 students under the guise of personnel savings. Furthermore, the KKE criticized the lack of funding for school committees, forcing parents and teachers to cover operational costs, and argued that existing renovation programs address only a small fraction of critical safety and maintenance needs, such as earthquake resistance and electrical installations.
