Klagenfurt water safety: Bacterial levels and drowning risks
Water safety concerns have been raised in Klagenfurt, Austria, involving both bacterial contamination and drowning risks. Recent testing at the Klagenfurt Strandbad revealed that E. coli levels exceeded the guideline value by more than threefold, with 307 bacteria measured per 100 milliliters of Wörthersee water. While city health official Birgit Trattler stated that bathing remains safe, the elevated levels indicate potential contamination from human or animal feces.
In the nearby Sattnitz (Glanfurt) area, which serves as the outflow for Lake Wörthersee, water quality has deteriorated. Intestinal enterococci have exceeded limit values, and E. coli levels were found to be five and a half times the guideline value in certain sections, making bathing in that specific area inadvisable.
Separately, forensic medicine experts have highlighted the rising number of drowning deaths. Discussions regarding drowning emphasize that even shallow water can be fatal due to factors such as unconsciousness, alcohol consumption, or sudden falls. Experts note that many individuals who are capable swimmers can still succumb to drowning unexpectedly.
