Klaipėda City Polyclinic faces staffing shortages and major reconstruction

Klaipėda City Polyclinic is facing a period of significant transition characterized by staffing shortages and planned large-scale infrastructure upgrades. Data from the Lithuanian Compulsory Health Insurance Fund indicates that between 2024 and the first half of 2026, the facility lost 27.7% of its doctors and nearly 17% of its nurses.

During a meeting of the Seimas Health Affairs Committee, polyclinic leadership attributed the staff departures to factors including retirement and insufficient funding. It was noted that doctors' salaries at the facility are approximately 30.7% lower than at similar healthcare institutions in the city. Management stated they are actively recruiting new specialists and have implemented some salary increases for the lowest-paid nurses.

To address long-term needs, the facility is set to undergo a major reconstruction project valued at 25.6 million euros. The renovation will involve a complete overhaul of the building's interior layout, engineering systems, and facade to improve patient flow and climate control. The project includes upgrading digital queue management, security, and communication systems, as well as adding a 120-space parking lot and improving accessibility for people with disabilities. The facility intends to continue operating during the construction period.
