Klaipėda highlights maritime culture and gastronomy

Klaipėda, Lithuania’s major port city, offers a diverse cultural and gastronomic landscape shaped by its maritime history and Baltic Sea location.

Culturally, the city is known for its year-round events, ranging from classical music and theater to jazz. A central highlight is the Sea Festival, an annual tradition held since 1934 at the end of July. This event transforms the city into a large-scale stage, featuring concerts at the cruise ship terminal, artisan markets along the Danė River, and traditional dance ensembles in Theater Square.

The city’s culinary scene is characterized by its German-influenced heritage and fresh seafood. The Old Town features restaurants in restored half-timbered houses, including the Friedricho Passage, which offers various European dishes and live music. Gastronomy in the region focuses heavily on local ingredients from the Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon, with specialties such as cod and eel being staples in local dining.
