Klaipėda implements new tire disposal initiative
Klaipėda city authorities are testing a new measure to combat illegal tire dumping by increasing the number of free tires residents can dispose of at KRATC collection sites. During a trial period, the limit for free tire disposal per resident will be raised from five to ten units per calendar year.
Renata Chockevičienė, head of the Environmental and Climate Change Department, noted that specialists identified 178 locations where tires had been illegally abandoned. Collecting and processing these tires requires significant human resources, time, and funding. To encourage more responsible waste management, KRATC will place temporary information stands in areas where illegal dumping is most frequent, such as near garages and residential neighborhoods.
KRATC Director Tomas Danisevičius stated that the increased limit is a temporary measure, and its effectiveness will be evaluated once the campaign concludes. He noted that while tire retailers and service stations are legally required to accept old tires when new ones are purchased, KRATC sites provide an additional option for residents.
