Klaipėda port expands green waste collection and ship‑repair capacity

The Lithuanian port of Klaipėda has introduced the world’s first hydrogen‑ and electric‑powered waste‑collection vessel, Rasa. Operated since May, the ship gathers waste from incoming vessels without leaving an environmental trace. In its first three months Rasa collected about 434 m³ of liquid waste, 871 m³ of sewage and 151 m³ of other waste, roughly half the volume of an Olympic‑size swimming pool. Port director Algis Latakas said the project shows how daily port operations can be aligned with ecological responsibility.

At the same time, Klaipėda is strengthening its ship‑repair infrastructure with a new 200‑metre floating dry dock built in Turkey. The $43 million investment, announced by Vakarų laivų remontas group director Arnoldas Šileika, will allow the port to service larger Panamax‑class vessels and increase its competitiveness in the international market. The dock, capable of lifting 15 000 tonnes, is slated to enter service in autumn 2027. The project involved officials from Lithuania and Turkey and is part of the BLRT Grupp ship‑repair network spanning Lithuania, Estonia and Finland.
