Klaipėda Seaport identified as critical strategic corridor for NATO security

The security of the Klaipėda-Neringa corridor, including the Klaipėda State Seaport and the Curonian Spit, has become a strategic priority for Lithuania and NATO’s eastern flank due to rising geopolitical tensions, hybrid threats, and sabotage risks.

The Klaipėda State Seaport serves a dual role as Lithuania’s primary commercial maritime artery and a critical military logistics hub. In the event of a crisis or conflict, the port would facilitate the deployment and logistical support of NATO allied forces and heavy military equipment.

Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas recently visited the port to discuss its strategic capabilities and its importance to national and regional security. Port Director General Algis Latakas noted that strengthening the port's resilience through cooperation with the Ministry of Defense is a top priority, requiring investments in modern weaponry and surveillance equipment.
