Klaipėda University research inspires Baltic Sea documentary
A new documentary film, ‘Nuskendusi žemė’ (Sunken Land), inspired by research from Klaipėda University (KU) scientists, was presented to the university community on October 15 at the Arlekinas cinema. The film explores the history of the landscape submerged under the Baltic Sea thousands of years ago.
The documentary centers on the work of Professor Vladas Žulkus, a pioneer of underwater archaeology in Lithuania, and his decades of research. His findings reveal how the landscape hidden beneath the Baltic Sea waters appeared in the past and uncover traces of human and natural history.
Director and underwater cinematographer Veronika Tamulionytė described the filming process as a test of patience, noting that weather conditions and waves often disrupted the team's work aboard the KU vessel ‘Brabander’. The film aims to blend scientific discovery with poetic cinematic storytelling, treating the sea as a vast museum of history.
