Klaipėda University to host discussion on EU regional investment effectiveness
Klaipėda University is organizing a public discussion in Tauragė titled ‘EU investments in regions: why (not) succeeding?’ to examine why European Union financial flows have not successfully reduced economic and social disparities between Lithuanian regions.
Despite two decades of EU funding being a primary source for regional development in Lithuania, participants will discuss why these investments do not always translate into long-term benefits for residents. Experts suggest that effective regional policy in Lithuania lacks a culture of cooperation and clear political responsibility for entire regions rather than just individual municipalities.
The discussion will address administrative and regulatory hurdles, the ability of regions to set their own development priorities, and whether current investment planning systems meet the specific needs of different Lithuanian regions. Local leaders emphasize that while EU funds are significant, long-term stability requires quality services, jobs, and clear state policies to prevent depopulation in smaller towns.
