Klaipėda Zoo animals removed following cruelty investigation

Four wild animals were removed from the Klaipėda Zoo on August 26 following a court order and an investigation into potential animal cruelty. The animals, which include a 19-year-old lion, a grey kangaroo, a mountain hare, and a golden pheasant, were transferred to the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) Wildlife Care Centre for urgent veterinary assistance.

Specialists reported that all four animals showed signs of health issues, with the lion, kangaroo, and hare requiring particularly immediate care. The lion was found to be emaciated and dehydrated, suffering from severe anemia, kidney insufficiency, bacterial and fungal infections, and ectoparasites. Due to its age and condition, experts noted it may remain at the care centre for the rest of its life.

The grey kangaroo appeared lethargic and emaciated, showing signs of potential osteosarcoma in its right knee. The mountain hare exhibited significant swelling in the elbow joint, suggesting possible arthritis, while the golden pheasant was found to have an improperly healed fracture in its right tibia.
