Brandenburg pumpkin championship winner falls short of one ton

At the pumpkin weighing championship in Klaistow, Brandenburg, winner Oliver Grafe secured first place with an Atlantic Giant pumpkin weighing 942.2 kilograms. Despite the victory, Grafe expressed disappointment at not reaching his personal goal of breaking the 1,000-kilogram mark.

The winning weight fell short of the previous year's winner, which weighed 1,034.8 kilograms. The current German record for giant pumpkins stands at 1,052 kilograms. More than 60 breeders from across Germany participated in the competition held at the Spargelhof Klaistow.

Grafe, a competitor for eleven years, noted that successful cultivation requires intensive care, often involving three to four hours of daily maintenance during peak growth, alongside specific soil and seed requirements. The pumpkins will be on display under the theme ‘Kürbis goes to Hollywood’ until November 15. On November 1, the pumpkins will be cut open so breeders can harvest the seeds for future cultivation.
