Klara and the Sun opens to weak North American box office

Taika Waititi’s science fiction film, ‘Klara and the Sun’, has recorded a disappointing theatrical debut in North America. Starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, the Sony Pictures release earned approximately $725,000 from 880 theaters across the United States and Canada, failing to reach the domestic weekend top ten.

Based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, the film follows Klara, an Artificial Friend (AF) designed to assist children, and her relationship with a sick child named Josie. Despite a high-profile cast including Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne, the production has faced challenges with both commercial performance and critical reception.

Critics have noted tonal inconsistencies in the adaptation, suggesting the film struggles to balance quirky humor with somber themes of grief and metaphysics. The film's performance follows similar uncertainty in other markets, such as Hungary, where its standard theatrical release was previously withdrawn.
