Klatovy railway bridge replacement to end hazardous “gilotina” by November
The low railway overpass in Klatovy, nicknamed the “gilotina”, is being replaced with a new, higher and wider steel bridge. The new structure will be about half a metre taller and will increase the clearance by roughly 3.6 metres, allowing trucks up to four metres high to pass safely.
Work is scheduled to finish by 23 November 2024. The old bridge will be closed to all traffic from 27 July, with a detour for vehicles and city buses along Za Tratí, Havlíčkova, Dragounská and U Zastávky, and a separate pedestrian route via Sadová. Regional rail traffic on the Sušice‑Pošumavská line will be suspended from 3 August to 16 November.
The project, led by Správa železnic in cooperation with the Klatovy municipality and the Road and Motorway Directorate, is estimated to cost about 44.5 million CZK. The overpass had been the site of frequent accidents, including a fatal crash two years ago when a trailer fell onto a car, killing a passenger.
