Kīlauea volcano begins episode 54 with high lava fountains

Episode 54 of the Kīlauea eruption began on the morning of August 25, 2026, at the summit in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Following a period of rapid inflation and low-level activity, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported that high lava fountain activity commenced at 10:30 a.m. HST.

Lava fountains initially reached heights of 15 to 20 meters and were expected to grow rapidly to approximately 150 meters. The eruption involves the north vent, which had previously shown signs of spattering and overflows.

The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement due to expected ashfall. While most large tephra is expected to fall near the vents, fine ash and Peleʻs hair may be distributed to the Kaʻū District, including communities such as Pāhala, Wood Valley, Naʻalehu, and Ocean View. Residents are advised to avoid excessive exposure to ash, as it acts as a respiratory and eye irritant.

This volcanic activity follows recent weather disruptions, including Hurricane Lala and Tropical Depression Moke, which had previously impacted the park's infrastructure and caused temporary closures.
