Klaus Luger faces verdict in Linz embezzlement trial

A verdict is expected this Friday at the Linz Regional Court in the embezzlement trial of former Linz Mayor Klaus Luger. The prosecution alleges that Luger used public funds to commission a legal expert opinion costing approximately 19,000 euros, which primarily served his own interests.

The case stems from the LIVA affair, involving the Brucknerhaus. Luger is accused of commissioning the report to clarify the legal consequences of having previously leaked interview materials to a job applicant, Dietmar Kerschbaum, to whom he had already forwarded the documents. While Luger admitted the commissioning was a ‘great mistake,’ he maintained the report was necessary to address whistleblower reports. The prosecution argues the report was intended to shield Luger from criminal liability.

Additionally, prosecutors are investigating whether further misconduct occurred. New allegations suggest that Luger may have used informal channels and personal influence to secure approximately 500,000 euros in consulting services and over-budget legal costs for LIVA. Authorities are currently determining if there is sufficient suspicion to initiate new criminal proceedings regarding these broader claims of power abuse.
