Klaus-Michael Kühne leaves multi-billion dollar fortune to foundation
German logistics tycoon Klaus-Michael Kühne has died at the age of 89. Having no direct heirs, Kühne has left his estimated fortune—valued between 42 billion euros and 49 billion dollars—to the Swiss-based Kühne Foundation.
The foundation will manage a vast global empire, including major controlling interests in the logistics giant Kuehne+Nagel and a significant stake in the shipping line Hapag-Lloyd. Other notable holdings include interests in Brenntag, Flix, and Deutsche Lufthansa.
Thomas Staehelin, a Basel-based lawyer and long-time vice president of the foundation's board, is expected to lead the organization. The transition to foundation-led ownership is intended to ensure long-term stability and prevent the fragmentation of assets that often follows the death of a major industrialist.
