Klaus-Michael Kühne, the prominent German logistics tycoon and one of the country's wealthiest individuals, has died in Schindellegi, Switzerland, at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by the logistics giant Kühne+Nagel.
Kühne was instrumental in transforming the family-owned freight forwarding business into a global logistics powerhouse, Kühne+Nagel, which now operates in approximately 100 countries with 88,000 employees. Through his private holding company, Kühne maintained significant influence across multiple sectors, including major stakes in the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, the airline Lufthansa, and the chemical logistics firm Brenntag, as well as the transport provider Flix.
In addition to his corporate empire, Kühne was a well-known figure in Hamburg, where he provided substantial financial support to the football club Hamburger SV (HSV) over many years. His wealth, estimated between 36 billion and 49 billion dollars, is expected to pass to the Kühne Foundation, an organization he co-founded to support social, cultural, and scientific causes.
