Miami Heat pursue Klay Thompson amid Dallas Mavericks trade preference

The Miami Heat are reportedly leading the pursuit of veteran guard Klay Thompson, though a stalemate exists regarding how he would join the team. According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, the Heat are ‘desperate’ for Thompson to bolster their perimeter shooting but prefer to sign him as a free agent rather than engaging in a trade.

The Dallas Mavericks have maintained a consistent stance since June, expressing a preference to trade Thompson rather than proceeding with a contract buyout. This preference is driven by roster management, as the Mavericks currently hold 16 standard contracts, exceeding the permitted limit. While Mavericks president Masai Ujiri has had direct contact with Thompson this offseason, his future remains uncertain.

If a trade does not materialize, Thompson could potentially become available via a buyout, which would allow teams like the Heat or the Lakers to acquire him. The Heat’s patient strategy has already had consequences, as they reportedly missed out on signing Bradley Beal, who chose to return to the Los Angeles Clippers while Miami waited for Thompson’s availability.
