Kleisoura Tunnel construction reaches 53% completion

Construction of the Kleisoura Tunnel in Western Macedonia has reached 53% completion. This major infrastructure project is designed to bypass the difficult Kleisoura mountain pass, which currently presents accessibility challenges due to steep inclines, sharp turns, and harsh winter weather conditions such as snow and ice.

The 1,365-meter tunnel will feature one lane of traffic in each direction, with a width of 3.75 meters. Once finished, the new route is expected to reduce travel time between Kastoria and Ptolemaida by approximately 30 minutes and improve access to Florina and other major regional road axes. The project, which began following a contract signed in 2022, aims to enhance road safety and stimulate economic development throughout the region.
