Klip River conservation group faces potential closure

The Klipriviersberg Sustainability Association (KlipSA), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting natural assets in southern Johannesburg, has warned it may close early next year. Chairperson Andrew Barker stated that the organization faces potential closure unless a professional team is established to manage succession, noting that efforts to recruit younger members have seen limited response.

KlipSA has operated for 17 years, focusing on the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve and the heavily polluted Klip River. Through its operational arm, the Klip River Water Stewardship Initiative (KlipWaS), the group works to improve water quality and flow within the catchment. The organization attributes the river's ongoing deterioration to failing water and wastewater infrastructure in Johannesburg.

A closure would jeopardize several ongoing and planned environmental projects, including water-stewardship programs for schoolchildren and the development of a planned wetland on the Robinson Canal.
