Ključ anniversary marks victims of wartime occupation and genocide

Commemorations have marked the anniversary of the occupation of Ključ, which occurred on September 14, 1995. During the conflict in the Prijedor region between April 1992 and late 1995, over 3,700 Serbs were killed. Specifically, 588 individuals from the Ključ municipality are listed as victims, ranging from a one-day-old infant, Nikola Knežević, to a 93-year-old woman.

Historical accounts note that early violence included the 1992 killing of Serbian civilians Sveta Bjelan and Vitu Orešković by Elver Pobrić, an event that contributed to the escalation of hostilities. Pobrić was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison.

In a broader historical analysis, discussions have emerged regarding the institutionalization of a ‘culture of guilt’ imposed on the Serbian people. This perspective suggests that external geopolitical pressures and internal ideologies have utilized collective guilt as a tool for pacification and mental engineering following major historical shifts in the mid-1940s and the early 2000s.
