KLM flight forced to return to Amsterdam after powerbank explosion

A KLM Boeing 777-300ER flight from Amsterdam to Curaçao was forced to make an emergency return to Schiphol Airport after a powerbank exploded in the business class cabin. The incident occurred over the North Atlantic at an altitude of approximately 30,000 feet, roughly five and a half hours into the flight.

The explosion, caused by a lithium-ion battery overheating, triggered a fire that scorched seat consoles and interior panels. Flight attendants managed to extinguish the flames quickly using fire blankets and subsequently submerged the device in water to prevent reignition. One passenger, identified in some reports as former KLM CEO Camiel Eurlings, reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Following the incident, the aircraft landed safely in Amsterdam. KLM provided hotel accommodations for the 322 passengers, who continued their journey to Curaçao the following morning on a replacement aircraft. The airline maintains strict regulations prohibiting the charging of powerbanks during flights to prevent thermal runaway incidents.
