Öklo launches beer made with purified human urine in Vienna
The Austrian company Öklo, in collaboration with bio-brewery Erzbräu, has launched ‘Zlatni tuš’, a lager-style beer made using highly purified water derived from human urine. The project, which follows approximately 18 months of research and development, was presented by Öklo founder Niko Bogianzidis.
A public tasting event was scheduled in Vienna at the Spittelau U4 subway station. The product is an unfiltered Märzen with 4.8 percent alcohol. Due to Austrian food regulations, which require the use of drinking or spring water for a product to be officially labeled as ‘beer’, the beverage is classified as a ‘hop-based beverage similar to beer’.
The initial release consists of a limited series of 2,500 bottles (330 ml each), priced at 3.90 euros. While the manufacturer claims early tasters have confirmed an excellent taste, the concept has drawn significant international media attention.
