Klodiana Spahiu sworn in as Albania's Minister of Health
Klodiana Spahiu has officially been sworn in as Albania’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare following her appointment by President Bajram Begaj, based on a proposal by Prime Minister Edi Rama. Spahiu, a cardiologist and Doctor of Medical Sciences, succeeds Evis Sala, who resigned from the position on September 2.
Spahiu has confirmed her intention to sign a controversial new law aimed at privatizing healthcare tenders. During a meeting with the leadership of the University Hospital Center (QSUT), she defended the initiative, stating that the Prime Minister’s proposal is “one of the best initiatives ever made in healthcare to ensure medicines for Albanians.”
The proposed legislation, which follows a model described as similar to the Kayo model, has faced significant criticism. The previous minister, Evis Sala, reportedly refused to sign the draft law, leading to her departure from the government.
