Kültepe archaeological site reveals Hellenistic mosaic structure

Archaeological excavations at the Kültepe Kaniş-Karum site in Kayseri, Turkey, have uncovered the remains of a structure featuring mosaic flooring dating back to the Hellenistic period. This discovery marks a significant milestone for the site, where excavations have been ongoing for approximately 78 years.

Prof. Dr. Fikri Kulakoğlu, head of the Kültepe excavations, noted that while previous findings primarily focused on the Bronze and Iron Ages, data regarding the later periods—specifically around the turn of the common era—had been difficult to secure due to surface damage from agricultural activities and illegal excavations. The discovery of this mosaic-floored building provides new evidence of monumental architecture during the Hellenistic era.

In the nearby İncesu district, additional findings in the Örenşehir neighborhood have also highlighted the region's Roman and Early Byzantine history. Local authorities, including Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Memduh Büyükkılıç, stated that the findings indicate a historical continuity spanning from the 4th to the 2nd century. Plans are currently underway in coordination with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to protect the site, cover the structures, and eventually open the area to controlled tourism.
