Klump shuts down after five years of BNPL operations in Nigeria

Nigerian fintech startup Klump has ceased operations after five years in the market. Co-founders Celestine Omin and Olufunbi Falayi announced the closure, noting that the company had considered both raising more capital and seeking an acquisition before deciding to wind down.

Founded in 2021, Klump provided a ‘buy now, pay later’ (BNPL) service through its flagship product, Pay with Klump, which allowed customers to split purchases into four installments. The startup raised $1.2 million during its tenure but struggled with challenges including difficulties securing sufficient lending capital, integration delays, and constraints from lenders.

The founders concluded that the BNPL model is more effective when embedded within larger financial services platforms rather than operating as a standalone product. The closure underscores the operational difficulties for independent credit-based payment services that rely heavily on continuous access to financing and bank partnerships.
