Kmart is utilizing an AI-driven chat interview tool developed by the Australian software provider Sapia.ai to screen its annual influx of more than 600,000 job applicants. The system replaces traditional CVs with an interactive chat process involving five questions designed to assess traits like reliability, multitasking, and teamwork.
While the tool promises speed and bias-free assessments, the software provides recommendations to employers that are adopted approximately 90 percent of the time. The system also includes safeguards to detect and flag plagiarized or artificially generated content. Experts and politicians have raised concerns that such AI hiring tools may entrench biases or exclude unconventional candidates from the job market.
