Kümbet Mosque in Kars undergoes restoration
Restoration work has commenced at the historic Kümbet Mosque in Kars to repair stone cladding on its roof. The structure was temporarily closed to worship due to falling stones caused by severe weather conditions and natural deformation.
Cultural Heritage and Art History Expert Faruk Torunoğlu stated that the mosque was closed briefly due to wear caused by cold temperatures and seasonal weather changes. The Erzurum Cultural Heritage Preservation Regional Board Directorate is overseeing the repairs to address gaps and wear between the stones. Once the work is completed, the mosque is expected to reopen for worship.
The Kümbet Mosque is a significant historical site that has served as a church, mosque, and museum throughout different eras. While some sources suggest it may date back to the 10th-century Bagratid Kingdom, its architectural features are noted to resemble 6th-century styles. It was converted into a mosque following the Seljuk entry into Kars.
