KMP Batumandi ferry sinks after fire near Merak Port

The KMP Batumandi ferry, operated by PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, caught fire on October 20, 2026, near Merak Port in Cilegon, Banten, while traveling from Bakauheni. The blaze was spotted around 4:15 PM WIB near the upper vehicle deck. While the fire was successfully extinguished by approximately 9:02 PM WIB, the vessel lost stability due to the weight of water used during firefighting efforts. Consequently, the ferry tilted and sank in the port's entrance channel on the night of October 21, 2026.

All 420 passengers and 40 crew members were successfully evacuated without fatalities. Eleven individuals received medical treatment at local facilities, including Krakatau Medika Hospital. PT Jasa Raharja has issued guarantees for the medical expenses of these victims.

Indonesian authorities, including the National Police (Polri) and the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), are investigating the cause of the fire to determine if it was caused by technical failure or intentional acts. Meanwhile, PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry is coordinating salvage operations to lift the sunken vessel, and authorities have installed buoys to prevent collisions with other ships in the vital maritime channel.
