KMP Batumandi sinking and fire in Merak waters triggers investigation

The KMP Batumandi passenger ferry caught fire on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, near Merak Port in Banten, Indonesia, before overturning and sinking on Wednesday, October 21. Authorities report that approximately 420 passengers were successfully evacuated, though some individuals sustained injuries.

Banten Regional Police (Polda Banten) have interviewed 18 witnesses, including crew members and passengers, to determine the cause of the fire. Investigators are coordinating with the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) and forensic laboratories, though a full crime scene investigation has been delayed due to high temperatures from the recent fire.

The Ministry of Transportation and PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry are working with PT Jasa Raharja and PT Jasaraharja Putera to manage insurance claims and medical costs for affected passengers. To maintain regional connectivity, ASDP has deployed the KMP Portlink III to support the Merak–Bakauheni route, and port authorities have confirmed that ferry operations at Merak remain normal despite the incident.
