KMP Putri Yasmin ferry catches fire in Lombok Strait

A fire broke out on the KMP Putri Yasmin ferry in the Lombok Strait on Wednesday morning while traveling from Bali to Lombok. The incident occurred at approximately 04:15 to 04:39 local time.

Rescue operations involving multiple vessels, a helicopter, and naval personnel successfully evacuated 212 people, including passengers rescued by the KMP Pratama Kalyani. One Indonesian passenger, 19-year-old Indah Dwi Septiani, was confirmed dead. At least 12 people required hospital treatment.

The ferry was carrying 114 passengers and 17 crew members according to the manifest, though the total number of people on board was being verified. The vessel was also transporting 44 vehicles and 53 motorcycles. Rescue efforts were complicated by rough sea conditions with waves reaching up to 4 meters.

Indonesian authorities and the Ministry of Transportation are investigating the cause of the fire, which local media suggested may have involved a truck on board. The incident has prompted calls from the Indonesian Parliament for immediate, large-scale safety inspections (ramp checks) of the national passenger fleet due to recurring maritime accidents.
