KNAB faces shortage of operational staff, says acting head

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) is facing a significant shortage of operational staff, according to Ineta Cīrule, the acting head of the agency. Cīrule noted that higher education institutions have not prepared sufficient investigators capable of handling complex cases over the last decade. However, the University of Latvia is expected to train its first ten investigators next year.

Despite staffing challenges, Cīrule stated that the number of cases initiated by KNAB has not decreased, and the bureau confiscated four million euros in the first half of the year. Additionally, the European Public Prosecutor's Office has launched four investigations based on materials provided by KNAB, with initial results expected this autumn.

The agency is currently undergoing a review by the State Audit Office to improve operations. This comes following the unexpected early retirement of former head Jēkabs Straume in August. The Cabinet of Ministers has opened a competition for the permanent leadership position, with applications accepted until September 18.
