Knee health research links diet to osteoarthritis and new training methods
New research and training perspectives are emerging regarding knee health and the prevention of osteoarthritis.
A study published in the journal Radiology, involving participants from the US-based Osteoarthritis Initiative, has identified a link between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and increased fat accumulation in thigh muscles. Researchers analyzed 615 participants with an average age of 60 and a typical overweight profile, finding a clear relationship between high intake of these foods—often high in sugar, salt, and fats—and complications related to joint inflammation.
In contrast to traditional medical advice that suggests keeping knees behind the toes during squats or lunges to avoid injury, fitness personality Ben Patrick, known as ‘Knees Over Toes Guy,’ advocates for training the joints through their full range of motion. His method involves exercises where the knees extend past the toes to increase athletic capacity and mitigate chronic pain, a practice that challenges long-standing conventional training recommendations.
