Kneecap promotes Gaelic language as a tool of cultural resistance
The Northern Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap, consisting of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, uses their music to promote the Gaelic language as a tool of resistance against colonialism and linguistic imposition.
During a visit to Mexico, the group participated in a discussion titled ‘Language as Resistance’ at the Foro Cultural San Ángel. They highlighted the parallels between the Irish struggle to preserve their language and the experiences of indigenous peoples in Mexico and Australia. The members noted that while their contexts differ, they share a history of facing imposed colonialism.
Formed in Belfast in 2017, the group’s origins are rooted in a protest against linguistic repression. Their music, often characterized by controversial content and explicit language, has gained significant popularity among youth seeking to reclaim their cultural identity. Working with the independent label Heavenly Recordings, the group continues to release works such as ‘3CAG’, ‘Fine Art’, and ‘FENIAN’ while maintaining creative freedom.
