NBA and FIBA set October 2027 start for new European basketball league

FIBA General Secretary Andreas Zagklis announced that the joint NBA‑FIBA project for a pan‑European competition will launch in October 2027. The plan calls for twelve permanent franchises in major European cities and four additional spots awarded through merit‑based qualification, including three clubs from the Basketball Champions League (BCL). All participating teams will receive equal initial revenue shares and performance‑based income, a principle described as “the biggest investment ever in European basketball.” Zagklis said the league will operate on an inclusive calendar that respects national leagues and international windows, and that discussions with the EuroLeague will continue without delaying the rollout. Former NBA star Pau Gasol was mentioned as a potential ambassador, though his involvement will depend on his decision. The project aims to elevate the sport’s commercial appeal across Europe while maintaining competitive balance for at‑least 150 clubs.
