Thousands of fans gathered around Madison Square Garden, but the festivities devolved into violent disturbances. Police reported 63 arrests for offenses including assault on officers, illegal weapons possession, property damage and obstruction of law enforcement. Ten police officers were injured, one by a punch and another by a glass bottle. A 17‑year‑old was wounded in a shooting near the intersection of 43rd Street and Broadway, and four separate stabbings were recorded. Five school buses and five police vehicles were set on fire or heavily vandalized, and numerous private cars suffered damage. Traffic on major avenues was blocked for hours as crowds climbed lampposts and traffic signals. In response, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced an official city parade to honor the Knicks and promised tighter security for future events.
