Knights Templar mass arrests in France mark historical October 13
On October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France orchestrated the simultaneous arrest of hundreds of Knights Templar members across the kingdom. The military and financial order, which had been a dominant force in medieval Europe, was accused of heresy, idolatry, and corruption. Following these arrests, the order faced a seven-year trial and intense interrogation by the Inquisition, eventually leading to its formal suppression by the Pope.
Other significant historical events occurring on this date include the laying of the White House cornerstone in 1792 and the establishment of the Greenwich Meridian as the universal zero meridian in 1884. In 1923, the Turkish Parliament declared Ankara the capital of Turkey. Additionally, in 1943, Italy declared war on its former Axis ally, Germany, during World War II.
