Königssee invasive mussel protection debate

The Berchtesgaden National Park has proposed a ban on air mattresses and stand-up paddleboards across the entire Königssee to prevent the spread of the invasive Quagga mussel. While strict regulations already apply to the southern part of the lake under national park ordinances, the heavily frequented northern section falls under the jurisdiction of the Berchtesgadener Land District Office.

The District Office has rejected the proposal for a lake-wide ban, stating that there is no legal framework to support such a measure. Officials noted that a total ban would not be considered proportionate under constitutional and water law.

As an alternative, authorities are pointing to existing Bavarian ‘Klar-Regeln’ (Clear Rules). These guidelines advise water sports enthusiasts to thoroughly inspect equipment—ranging from inflatable boats to diving gear—before moving between bodies of water, drain residual water, rinse material with hot water away from the lake, and allow equipment to rest for at least five days.
