Königswinter care staff wear bathrobes to raise dementia awareness
Staff members from the compassio Seniorenresidenz Kaiserpalais in Königswinter, Germany, participated in a public awareness campaign for dementia by walking through the streets and onto a Rhine ferry wearing bathrobes.
Alexander Wieck, the facility director, explained that the bathrobes symbolize the moments of confusion and disorientation experienced by those living with the disease. The initiative aims to promote openness, solidarity, and understanding for both patients and their families. Staff noted that the campaign addresses the social stigma and shame often felt by caregivers when people with dementia behave in ways that deviate from social norms.
The action is part of a broader challenge inspired by the DZNE Foundation. In Germany, approximately 1.8 million people live with dementia, including about 106,000 individuals under the age of 65.
